Brain Injury
At Finch McCranie, LLP our Atlanta, Georgia personal injury attorneys often work with injury clients who have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) because of a serious accident, such as a car crash, a truck accident, or medical malpractice incident.
Brain injuries can range from minor injuries to serious TBIs. Some of our clients have brain injuries and don't even know that is what they are suffering from. Many of our brain injury clients recover only minimally from their injury. This is why it is so important to become familiar with the different kinds of brain injuries that exist, the complications that can arise, and the societal and legal consequences that come with having a brain injury.
A head injury or TBI can happen when a person's brain is damaged by sudden trauma. A TBI can occur when the head makes violent and sudden contact with an object or when something penetrates the skull and goes into the brain. Depending on how much damage there is to the brain, TBI symptoms can range from severe to moderate to mild.
A person with a TBI should get medical attention right away. There is not much that a physician or TBI specialist can do to reverse a TBI. Medical personnel should attempt to stabilize a TBI patient and concentrate on not allowing further injury to occur. Treatment can include maintaining the proper blood flow, making sure that the body and the brain get enough oxygen, and regulating blood pressure.
The diagnosis and prognosis of a patient with a TBI can be done using imaging tests. X-rays to the neck and skull can be performed on people with mild or moderate injuries to see if there is spinal instability or bone fractures. A CT scan is an imaging test that is used to examine moderate and serious TBI injuries.
Patients with a moderate or severe TBI can undergo rehabilitation, which can entail customized treatment programs involving occupational therapy, physical therapy, social support, speech language therapy, and physiatry.
Nearly 50% of patients with serious head injuries will need to undergo surgery to repair or remove bruised brain tissue (contusion) or ruptured blood vessels (hematoma). Disabilities caused by a TBI can depend on where in the brain the injury is located, the seriousness of the injury, and the patient's general health and age. There is no way to predict what disabilities can result.
