There are different kinds of TBIs. A concussion is the most common kind of TBI and can occur when the head is affected by a gunshot wound, a direct blow, violent shaking, or a whiplash-like injury.
Trauma from sudden movement change, momentum, or impact can lead to a concussion. A person with a concussion may lose consciousness. Concussions are not always visible on CT scans and other diagnostic imaging tests. Swelling, bleeding of the brain, and skull fractures can sometimes accompany a concussion. A concussion may result in a diffuse axonal kind of injury, which can lead to temporary or permanent damage and brain clotting. This can be fatal.
A diffuse axonal injury can occur when there is strong rotating or shaking of the head. The strong rotation or shaking kind of injury is commonly called Shaking Baby Syndrome. This kind of injury takes place because the brain is lagging behind the skull's movement. As a result, brain structures are torn. Serious tearing of the brain's nerve tissue can lead to brain chemicals being released, which can result in more injury. Tearing of the brain tissue can affect the brain's regular chemical and communication processes. This kind of brain injury can lead to death, coma, or permanent or temporary brain damage.
A contusion is another kind of TBI. A bleed or bruise on the brain is called a contusion. A contusion can sometimes be removed with surgery. A contusion that takes place in the area of the brain where the impact occurred and at the exact opposite area of the brain is called a coup-contrecoup. This happens when the head is struck by a force hard enough to shift the brain so that it hits the skull's opposite side.
A penetrating brain injury is a more obvious kind of brain injury that commonly occurs. A penetrating brain injury usually occurs because the impact from a knife, bullet, or another sharp object causes skin, hair, bone, and object fragments to enter the brain. A penetrating brain injury is very serious and often results in death.
Medical costs for brain surgery and other procedures and treatments needed to recover from a TBI can be very expensive. If you or your loved one is suffering from a TBI because of an accident caused by another person's negligent or reckless behavior, you should speak with a TBI attorney right away.
